The GAC Honda 2019 Hangzhou Marathon drew a record number of participants, with 139,899 runners having registered for the event, setting a new record. The registration closed on Aug 15.

According to the organizers, this year's event attracted runners from 59 countries and regions from across the world. Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangdong and Beijing are the top five sources of runners.

Statistics reveal that the half marathon and full marathon are the most popular events, with 59,739 and 37,260 participants registered.

Among all the participants, 82,542 people signed up for the marathon for the first time, while 5,986 people made it back for the fifth consecutive year.

The annual marathon, which will take place in Hangzhou on Nov 3, can only accommodate 36,000 contestants. Organizers said that a ballot will be held to select the final contestants for the marathon and the results will be announced on Aug 29.
