As global tariff changes threaten to disrupt international orders, East China's Zhejiang province is mobilizing major platforms to help foreign trading firms to pivot from exports to domestic sales.
Taizhou city based manufacturer Zhejiang Era Solar Technology Co, which exports 70 percent of its solar power systems to the United States, is already feeling the impact.
"Normally we receive advance orders between April and October, but this year clients are hesitant. We can't stock up as usual," said Xia Xiaoli, its sales manager.
In 2024, Zhejiang's exports to the US exceeded 630 billion yuan ($86 billion), accounting for 16.2 percent of the province's total. In Jiaxing city in northern Zhejiang, four sectors — textiles, furniture, hardware and luggage — make up 70 percent of US-bound goods.
Local authorities are now surveying the affected companies, many of which lack experience in domestic operations.
To support the shift, Zhejiang-based platforms are stepping in. Livestream e-commerce firm Meet the Friend, backed by the provincial commerce department, has launched a program to help exporters build brands and sell directly to Chinese consumers.
Services include product analysis, design optimization and pricing strategies.
Major retail and e-commerce players have joined the push. JD.com has pledged to purchase over 200 billion yuan in export-to-domestic goods, Pinduoduo is boosting subsidies for small exporters, Bravo Superstores is fast-tracking shelf placement within 15 days and Fresh Hippo has opened a 24-hour green channel for foreign trading firms.
"This channel offers supply chain support and co-develops branded products to help exporters succeed domestically," said Shen Li, vice-president of Fresh Hippo.
The platform is welcoming such categories as home goods, sports, pet care, beauty and maternity products.
Zhejiang's coordinated effort marks a full-chain campaign to turn export challenges into new domestic growth opportunities.
