Tianxi Lake, at the heart of Nanbao Provincial Wetland Park in Tonglu county, Hangzhou, has become a winter haven for migratory birds, including the rare Chinese merganser — known as the "giant panda of birds".
Spanning 881 hectares, the wetland hosts over 200 bird species. Since 2020, the Chinese merganser has returned annually, highlighting the success of ongoing environmental protection efforts such as habitat restoration, water monitoring, and public education.
The improved environment has also boosted eco-tourism. Nearby villages have developed homestays and fruit-picking farms, turning environmental protection into economic opportunity.
