The critically acclaimed stage adaptation of the Life of Pi, based on Yann Martel's best-selling novel and Ang Lee's Oscar-winning film, is set to make its Asian tour debut on May 15-18 in Hangzhou – capital of East China's Zhejiang province – at the Hangzhou Grand Theater.
Bringing the magical realism of the novel to the stage was considered an impossible feat, just as the film adaptation once was.
However, after a decade of creative effort, the London West End production team brought the story to life – using puppetry, stunning stagecraft and brilliant lighting to create breathtaking theatrical moments.
The production won five Olivier Awards and three Tony Awards, earning global acclaim.
The play follows 16-year-old Pi, who survives a shipwreck alongside a dog, a zebra, an orangutan and a Bengal tiger. Stranded on a lifeboat, they must navigate the harsh forces of nature – and each other – to survive.
With the original West End and Broadway creative team leading the Asian tour, Hangzhou audiences will be among the first in the region to experience this extraordinary theatrical journey.
Tickets go on sale on Feb 13, with a priority purchase window at 11 am and general sales starting at 12 pm.
