The 12th Southern Song Dynasty Tea Competition was held at Hangzhou's Ziyang Primary School on Nov 30, offering a showcase of traditional tea culture and attracting participants of all ages.

The competition featured three categories: Speed Tea Whisking, Young Tea Makers, and Innovation. Speed Tea Whisking challenged participants to complete the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) tea-whisking ritual within 90 seconds, testing both precision and skill. The Young Tea Makers category drew over 50 primary school participants, while in the Innovation category, competitors presented creative new tea beverages, infusing tradition with a modern flair.

Liu Luyu, the youngest contestant and a first-grader at Hangzhou Tianchang Primary School, impressed attendees with her passion for tea-making.

Chen Yanping, Liu's tea art teacher, described her as a naturally curious child whose questions about tea fuel her learning. "Our school emphasizes learning with a playful spirit. Through tea art classes, we aim to immerse students in the beauty of tea culture while fostering their curiosity."

The innovation category also spotlighted veteran tea artist Hua Bo, a State-certified master tea maker and teacher at Ziyang Primary School. Drawing inspiration from the Southern Song Dynasty grinding tea scene, Hua recreated historical tea rituals while introducing modern drinks, such as matcha infused with osmanthus jelly. "Tea culture evolves, and integrating modern tea trends is essential for its preservation and promotion," she said.

The event also incorporated elements of Southern Song Dynasty culture, such as live calligraphy from renowned artists and interactive exhibits showcasing the era's tea traditions. Participants were able to engage with tea culture through hands-on experiences, enhancing the event's educational and immersive appeal.
