The ongoing 2024 Hangzhou International Contemporary Ceramics Biennale is a demonstration of the scope and depth of the art form. Work by international artists and the younger generation of Chinese artists reveals the way they transport an otherwise traditional craft into the realm of contemporary art, and how they integrate individualism with a commitment to preserving cultural tradition.
Some of the pieces on display are inspired by two hallmark forms of Chinese ceramics; celadon, and Blanc de Chine, a French term for the creamy white porcelain historically produced in the kilns of Dehua county, Quanzhou, Fujian province.
The integration of new techniques and materials lends the pieces a contemporary touch and they demonstrate the artists' respect of ceramics, which require patience to produce, as well as their individual forms of expression.
The exhibition runs at the Crafts Museum of China Academy of Art, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, until Dec 15.
9:30 am-4:30 pm, closed on Mondays. Inside the Xiangshan campus of the China Academy of Art, 352 Xiangshan Lu, Xihu district, Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. 0571-6433-8887.
