In Xiaoshan's Guali town, Hangzhou, a unique bird sanctuary is thriving under the care of one woman.
Wang Kaiqin, 37, has dedicated 26 years to safeguarding a wetland home to over 40,000 birds of 82 species, including 10 under national protection. It is Zhejiang's only provincial birdwatching site managed by an individual.
The sanctuary features ponds, camphor trees, and an observation deck. It attracts migratory and resident birds like egrets and spot-billed ducks, while also drawing 20,000 visitors annually. Despite challenges like birds consuming her fish stock, Wang balances conservation with aquaculture, adjusting her farming practices to coexist with the wildlife.
Wang's efforts have transformed the wetland into a recognized ecological and educational hub. She hopes her work inspires more people to promote harmony between humans and nature, while local authorities continue to support her conservation mission.
