The 2024 Jiande Marathon kicked off on Nov 17 with 12,000 runners from across China embarking on a race that blended natural landscapes with cultural heritage. The event, now in its sixth year, is the only marathon in Zhejiang province to be consistently held over the past five years.

Runners set off from the Jiande Museum, tackling a new course along the Xin'an Greenway, which showcased landmarks like the Summer Winter Swimming Base, Zijin Bridge, and the Xin'an River Hydropower Station. Despite light rain, the enthusiasm was palpable. Ma Meng from Shandong province clinched the men's full marathon title with a time of 2:24:50, while Weng Weixian won the women's race in 2:54:43.

Participants praised the stunning scenery and well-designed route. French runner Tavernier Antoine, who has lived in Hangzhou for 18 years, remarked, "Running here is pure bliss." Meanwhile, Zhejiang locals, including veteran runner Zhao Jianyong and retired labor model Kong Shengdong, highlighted the event's blend of sport and community spirit.

This year's marathon offered a full-marathon, half-marathon, and fun run, welcoming runners as young as 18 and as old as 73. Organizers also integrated tourism, encouraging participants to explore Jiande's ancient towns, natural wonders and more. Special discounts for scenic spots are available to runners through Dec 31.
