Global environmental and development leader Erik Solheim visited China Jiliang University in Hangzhou on Nov 4, where he delivered a keynote speech on global youth leadership and sustainable development and was appointed as an honorary professor of the university.

Currently serving as the co-chair of the Europe-Asia Center, Solheim was previously under-secretary-general of the United Nations and executive director of the UN Environment Programme. Earlier this year, he was honored with the 2023 Chinese Government Friendship Award.

In his speech, Solheim highlighted China's leading position in industries such as renewable energy, new energy vehicles and batteries, emphasizing Zhejiang's pivotal role in nature conservation and green development initiatives.

In June, China Jiliang University's Carbon Neutrality and Green Development Research Center launched the Nature Partners Program. This initiative, based on the concept of ecology plus, aims to forge connections between individuals from diverse industries and professions through nature conservation.

Solheim lauded the initiative for its people-centered approach, saying that fostering a sense of achievement in green development among a wider range of people is crucial for effective environmental advocacy and public engagement.

Regarding his appointment as an honorary professor at the university, Solheim said that he would offer courses and lectures to students and wants to facilitate international collaborations and bring students closer together through the use of global resources.
