The International Paralympic Committee announced the six newly elected members of its Athletes' Council on Sept 6, with Chinese para powerlifter Tan Yujiao among them.
Tan, who recently claimed her third consecutive Paralympic gold in the women's 67kg category at the Paris Paralympics, also broke her own world record with a lift of 142kg.
This marks the first time a Chinese athlete has been elected to the IPC Athletes' Council. Tan expressed her gratitude at being chosen, stating that she looks forward to representing para-athletes on the global stage and fostering better communication between China's Paralympic community and the international organization.
The newly elected members made their debut during the Paris Paralympics closing ceremony on Sept 8. The other members were Martina Caironi (Para athletics) and Vladyslava Kravchenko (Para swimming), both re-elected, as were Denise Schindler (Para cycling), Yoomin Won (wheelchair basketball) and Lenine Cunha (Para athletics), the first athlete with an intellectual disability to be elected.
