Westlake University in Hangzhou held the opening ceremony for its 2023 undergraduate class on July 30, marking the beginning of an exciting academic journey for 93 new students.

This year's newcomers include three foreign students, adding a global touch to the campus.

The 2023 class includes 50 percent more students from within Zhejiang province, including students from all 11 cities, than last year, which included 60 students from within the province. This year also witnessed a shift in student demographics, with more students from the second year of high school compared to those in their third year. Furthermore, the ratio of female students has more than doubled since last year.

Chen Siyuan, a pharmaceutical-sciences major, said her interest in research was sparked during a summer program through which she got a taste of the enchanting world of scientific exploration.

"Choosing Westlake University for my studies was an easy decision. The exceptional faculty, advanced facilities, and the option for direct Ph.D. admission made it stand out. The campus environment is ideal for me," Chen said.

The arrival of the three international students also heralds a new chapter in the school's commitment to global education, as they will integrate into the student body, engaging in cross-cultural and interdisciplinary learning alongside their domestic counterparts.
