Tea farmers at the Longjing tea plantations of the West Lake scenic area were recently seen hanging nets to provide shade, reduce soil moisture evaporation and minimize the damage to tea trees caused by scorching sunlight, local media outlets reported.

As July 11 marked the arrival of the dog days in Hangzhou, the temperature soared to a smoldering 39.5 degrees Celsius. The local meteorological department also issued the first high-temperature orange warning of the year.

The dog days, traditionally known as a period of extreme heat, have brought surging temperatures and intense sunlight. These conditions pose a significant challenge for tea farmers who rely on a delicate balance between sunlight and shade to cultivate high-quality tea leaves.

The dedication and ingenuity of tea farmers exemplify the deep connection between humans and nature in the cultivation of this beloved beverage. Their commitment to quality and their determination to overcome the challenges posed by the intense heat reflect the resilience and passion for tea that has been passed down through generations.
