Construction recently started on the East Shanghai Railway Station, or Shanghaidong, near the Pudong International Airport, local media outlets reported.

The project is a major step toward realizing the planned Shanghai-Zhapu-Hangzhou high-speed railway network that will connect the stations of Shanghaidong and Hangzhouxi, also known as West Hangzhou Railway Station.

In the future, it will take some 40 minutes to travel between the two transportation hubs.

The Shanghai-Zhapu-Hangzhou high-speed railway network, designed with a total length of about 192 kilometers and a maximum speed of 350 km per hour, will help to better meet the high demand for rail travel between Shanghai and Hangzhou, the two most populous cities in East China.

The Shanghaidong Station is located approximately 5 km away from Terminal 1 of the Pudong International Airport.

In addition, a station is expected to be constructed in the north of Hangzhou's Linping district along the Shanghai-Zhapu-Hangzhou high-speed railway.
