East China's Zhejiang province shared its biodiversity conservation efforts at the "Zhejiang Day" sub-event of the second stage of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal on Dec 10.

In Hangzhou, the provincial capital, importance has been attached to the protection of biodiversity.

The city has marked a total area of 4,694.46 square kilometers as a red line for ecological protection and established 34 protected natural areas at the provincial level. The forest coverage rate has reached 66.85 percent, and 140,000 hectares of wetland have been preserved per unit area of eight hectares or more.

According to a region-wide species background survey, several new global species and new distributions in China have been found in Hangzhou. More than 5,000 species of plants and animals have been recorded, including 108 species of wild animals and 64 species of wild plants under national key protection.

At the same time, the concept of green, low-carbon and sustainable development has been integrated into the whole process and all areas being prepared for the Hangzhou Asian Games. Green action for the Asian Games has been carried out to minimize the impact of preparations on the environment and biodiversity, aiming to create the first carbon-neutral Asian Games in history.
