The figure that appeared at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium patrolling the venue every day is none other than Zheng Xiongying, a three-time Paralympic gold medalist of women's sitting volleyball. She is currently helping with preparations for the 19th Asian Games, which will be held in Hangzhou this September.
"I used to receive help from volunteers. Now I want to return the favor," Zheng said.
Though she is familiar with the needs of differently-abled athletes like herself, Zheng said it took her a couple of days to adapt to her role behind the scenes, as she is used to being in front of the curtain.
Having been on duty for roughly four months, Zheng knows by heart the 196 barrier-free chairs and 25 private barrier-free restrooms at the stadium.
In addition to ensuring that accessible ramps, toilets and seats meet standards, Zheng benefited from her rich experience in domestic and international events and noticed details that are easily overlooked and was able to view things from an athlete's perspective.
"Though my athletic experience is of use in my current work, I'm still a newbie and have a lot to learn," Zheng said.
