A flagship shield tunneling machine, which is over 15 meters in diameter, 120 m in length, and 4,300 metric tons in weight, began operating in Hangzhou on May 9, local media outlets reported.
The machine is the largest shield tunneling machine manufactured by a company in Zhejiang province, indicating the province's strength in manufacturing.
The machine will be used in the tunnel project around the Qiantang River, the Shanhusha Reservoir, and the Zhijiang Campus of Zhejiang University, which is regarded as the longest tunnel project currently underway. The machine will help tackle complex local geological conditions.
The project, once completed, will be four lanes wide, both above and underground.
