Xiaoshan district in Hangzhou recently began testing buses with 5G network connections.

The project was co-conducted by Hangzhou Xiaoshan Transportation Investment Group Co and Datangxingtong, an information technology company. Two buses owned by Hangzhou Xiaoshan Bus Company are currently being tested.

Various pieces of equipment installed in the buses are able to interact with each other through the use of 5G. The 5G equipment is able to predict road conditions and report them to the driver, according to a worker from Hangzhou Xiaoshan Company.

The equipment will automatically offer advice on speed and routes to the driver, according to the worker.

The current traffic light color can also be displayed on the rear of the bus for drivers whose line of vision is blocked by the bus.

5G buses can also warn drivers of emergencies, such as cars running red lights or changing lanes.

Both drivers involved in the test run of course praised the warning system, saying it will help passengers enjoy a smoother ride.

A passenger surnamed Jin said that the bus drove at a steady pace and provided a comfortable trip, adding that the driver never once slammed on the brakes.

The 5G WIFI signal is still in the trial stages and will be available to passengers in the future. Luo Changxu, deputy director of the Hangzhou Research Institute for Public Transportation Development, said that the 5G buses will become widely used in Hangzhou as more 5G base stations are built around the city.
