A hotel which is to be built into the side wall of an abandoned quarry in the Hangzhou Airport Economic Zone was officially included in the city's development plan Aug 24, local media reported.

Dubbed the "deep pit hotel", the complex will be the second of its kind in China. Shanghai is home to the first one, InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, which was unveiled to the public in November 2018. National Geographic commended the hotel as the "architectural wonder of the world".

The Hangzhou edition is designed to rise straight from the "40-meter-deep pit" of Leishan Hill, which sits adjacent to Qiantang River and was quarried decades ago. Local residents used its stone to enclose land and build dams for flood prevention.

According to the plan, the hotel will cover at least 25,000 square meters and enjoy convenient access to Hangzhou International Airport.

It will feature elements closely connected with Chinese aeronautic and astronautic culture. Guests can view crags and rocky outcrops from hotel rooms, or immerse themselves in the complete recreational surroundings of geological and Asian culture parks, a museum, an art gallery, a sports center, an urban planning exhibition center, and food and commercial streets.
