A student with autism was recently admitted by Zhejiang University, according to an interview by Hangzhou Daily with a staff member at the rehabilitation department of Hangzhou Disabled Persons' Federation.
The good news was contributed by Xiaotian's (alias) parents and medical workers at the rehabilitation department, who have devoted years of love and efforts to help the young man recover his health and catch up with his peers.
The 18-year-old was diagnosed autism in early childhood and started health rehabilitation training in Hangzhou in 2006. Three years later, he had recovered quite well and gradually began to show competence in language and interpersonal skills that were comparable to his peers.
Along with Xiaotian starting off his school life, his parents stayed vigilant and maintained close contact with the training center.
"As a parent, I would suggest you stay confident about your child," said Xiaotian's mother. "You should choose a professional rehabilitation center and your efforts will finally pay off."
With growing emphasis on the health recovery of people with disabilities, Hangzhou released a list of designated rehabilitation institutions for disabled children in 2016, covering training for hearing, language, cerebral palsy, autism, intelligence and limbs. A year later, the local government furthered its work in three specific areas: disability prevention, postnatal monitoring, and early-stage recovery training.
