Rural residents of Hangzhou recently got the chance to witness Wei's troupe, a team of shadow puppetry performers who have traveled to more than 20 surrounding villages since June.

Wei's troupe is an old local troupe that has been passed down for centuries. By moving cut-out figures between a light source and a translucent screen, these talented performers manage to entertain both children and adults by making the figures walk, dance, fight, nod, and laugh.

Well-known stories and tales, such as Mr Dongguo and the Wolf, Wu Song Beats the Tiger, and A Snipe and A Clam Locked in Combat, are often performed. After the show, attendees are often invited to the stage to try their hands at the art form.

Shadow play is a popular form of entertainment in Hangzhou and other parts of China. Wei's troupe was listed as Hangzhou intangible cultural heritage item in 2018.
