Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, will establish West Lake Day and Liangzhu Day to commemorate the city's two world cultural heritage items, according to a news conference on June 19.

Hangzhou is home to three UNESCO World Heritage items – West Lake, the Liangzhu Archaeological Ruins, and the Hangzhou section of the Grand Canal. It announced that the two newly-established days will fall on June 24 and July 6, respectively, the same days that West Lake and the Liangzhu ruins were inscribed into the UNESCO list.

Jin Heng, deputy director of the administrative committee of the West Lake Scenic Area, said that the first West Lake Day will consist of a variety of activities being held citywide, including a poetry contest, an art exhibition for seal cutting, and a fair for creative products. On June 24, all parks in the scenic area will open for free to all visitors who make appointments in advance.

"We hope to involve everyone in the protection of West Lake by creating opportunities and holding activities for them," said Jin.

Celebrations for Liangzhu Day will last an entire week, according to Chen Shoutian, deputy director of the administrative committee of the archaeological ruins.

Chen noted that the celebrations will be held both online and offline and the public will be encouraged to take part.
