The Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City in Yuhang district, Hangzhou is using a driverless vehicle to deliver food to companies in the city’s Artificial Intelligence Town and 5G Innovation Park.

The special deliveryman, known as “retrograde motion”, is tasked with delivering food from the town canteen to various companies.

The robot was developed by Dewei Technology Co Ltd, located in the 5G Innovation Park. Representatives from the company said that the robot can provide “no-contact” delivery services to help reduce infections amid the current coronavirus outbreak.

According to Chen Zhenghui, chief of the company’s research and development center, the robot can deliver 90 packaged meals simultaneously.

Every day at noon, workers at the canteen put packaged meals into the vehicle and disinfect it. The vehicle then travels across the park to a designated spot where employees can pick out their meals by scanning a QR code.

Chen said that the vehicle was connected via 5G signals spread throughout the park.

“The remote command center for the vehicle is located in our company, providing safety in case it malfunctions” he added.
