Yuhang district in Hangzhou recently initiated a "chief data officer" system to aid in the digitalization of local traditional manufacturing companies.
Chief data officer is a title granted by the Yuhang Economic and Technological Development Zone to those who specialize in digitalizing the process of a company's production and operations. They are often managers of companies.
Currently, 278 managers in the district are serving as chief data officers.
"Traditional manufacturing companies find it hard to transition despite knowing that digital technology can help improve efficiency and reduce costs," said Fan Xiufang, general manager of production at Hangzhou Eastern Fabric Co Ltd, who was also an appointed chief data officer.
Fan's is responsible for accelerating the digitalization of traditional manufacturing companies. The Yuhang Economic and Technological Development Zone aids in this process.
"Human resource costs are expected to decrease 20 percent and production efficiency is estimated to increase 20 percent by next June, when the digitalization process is completed," Fan added.
The "chief data officer" system was meant to help companies which need to digitalize but lack the expertise, said an official with the management committee of the Yuhang Economic and Technological Development Zone.
The 278 chief data officers need to design specific solutions for companies, and apply for rewards from the development zone with their solutions.
The development zone provided training for the chief data officers to help them better adapt to their new jobs.
