The 3rd Hangzhou Forum on Waste Sorting opened on Nov 26, bringing together a number of representatives from Hangzhou's districts to showcase their waste-sorting practices.
The forum was divided into two sessions, with the morning session featuring a dialogue on how to get communities more involved in waste sorting.
The morning session was attended by officials, media reporters, volunteers, staff members from companies and schools, and representatives from neighborhood communities.
The afternoon session was attended by a number of representatives from counties and districts in Hangzhou who shared their experiences in waste sorting and received evaluations from judges afterwards.
The judges included Peng Baohua, deputy director of the Hangzhou urban management bureau, Fan Zheng, deputy head of Xiachneg district, Xu Lin, professor of the School of Public Management at Zhejiang University, and Yu Baihong, deputy editor-in-chief of Zhejiang Workers' Daily.
Twenty four demonstration areas for waste sorting were set up during the forum and 24 firms demonstrated their latest products in third-party waste sorting, collection, recycling, and handling of perishable waste.
The forum has been held annually since 2017.
Over the years, Hangzhou has made strong effort to achieve the "double zero" goal set by the Zhejiang Provincial Government. According to the "double zero" goal, Hangzhou should halt the increase of household waste and end the practice of raw waste landfilling by 2020.
Currently, there are 409 city-level waste-sorting demonstration communities in Hangzhou.
