The 6th China Grand Canal Temple Fair opened at the Grand Canal scenic area in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, on Oct 17.

With a history of over 2000 years, the Grand Canal stretching from Hangzhou to Beijing is about 1,764 kilometers long. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the river was the longest man-made waterway in ancient China.

The temple fair, which is meant to celebrate the traditional culture of the Grand Canal, will last from Oct 17 to Oct 23.

The seven-day event will feature traditional Chinese cultural performances and several Grand Canal-themed exhibitions, as well as agricultural products, handicrafts created using traditional techniques, and local specialties from across Zhejiang province.

Visitors will also be offered opportunities to take a boat trip on the ancient waterway to enjoy some of its unrivaled scenery.

On Oct 19 and 20, a grand ceremony to release lanterns over the river will be held to bring good luck, in accordance with Chinese tradition.
