Westlake University professor receives intl award

Professor Deng Li from the Westlake University received the 2020 Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, one of the highest international awards in organic chemistry, on Sept 1.
Deng graduated from Tsinghua University in 1987 and got his doctoral degree at Harvard University in 1995. He is currently the chair professor of Westlake University, director of the academic board, and executive dean of the university's Faculty of Science.
The research findings made by Professor Deng and his team have improved understanding of organic synthetic chemistry, reduced expenses in the pharmaceutical industry, and reduced environmental pollution in the chemistry industry.

The Arthur C. Cope Scholar Awards, sponsored by the Arthur C. Cope Fund, were launched in 1986. The award recognizes 10 outstanding winners each year for their contributions to organic chemistry. Award winners over the years have included many winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, such as K. Barry Sharpless, Robert H. Grubbs, Ryoji Noyori, J. Fraser Stoddart, and Ben Feringa.
