Dream Town, a characteristic town in Hangzhou famed as a hub for entrepreneurs, recently made a spectacular debut on national television when CCTV aired an episode exploring the achievements of Zhejiang province over the past 70 years.

A characteristic town is neither a town defined administratively nor an industrial zone, but is rather an area with specific industry orientations, cultural elements, tourism features and community functions.

In the national craze to create such towns, Hangzhou is taking the lead in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in terms of the quantity and quality of its characteristic towns, as evidenced by Dream Town and Cloud Town.

According to an action plan for Hangzhou's participation in YRD integration, more efforts will be made to jointly establish Dream Towns in Shanghai and Hefei in Anhui province by leveraging the talent and scientific and technological resources of these cities.

Both Shanghai and Hefei are home to national major science centers whose talent and scientific and technological resources perfectly complement Hangzhou's innovative vitality and industrial development, said a spokesman from the Hangzhou Development and Reform Commission.

He noted that Hangzhou could not only raise the profile of its characteristic towns, but also provide a platform for talents and entrepreneurs in the two cities.

Jin Tao, an official from Huangshan, Anhui province, said that the construction of Hangzhou's characteristic towns was worth studying.

Since its inception in August 2014, the town has become home to over 15,700 entrepreneurs from across the county.

Last September, an alliance on the development of characteristic towns in the YRD region was launched in Shanghai.
