China Telecom and China Mobile, two leading telecommunication giants in China, were appointed official telecommunications services partners for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, the organizing committee announced on July 11.

Telecommunications play an important role in the information services of the event, and are also the prerequisite for hosting a "green, smart, economical and ethical" games, Chen Weiqiang, deputy mayor of Hangzhou, said in a speech at the signing ceremony.

He hoped that the alliance between the telco groups and organizers would doubly insure the telecommunications services for the 2022 Asian Games.

"The 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games is being held at a critical point when international information and communications services are being transformed from the 4G to the 5G era," said Chen Hua, deputy head of China Telecom, Zhejiang branch.

"We have the responsibility and obligation to present a high-tech and intelligent sports bonanza to the world," Chen added.

China Mobile said it will provide intelligent communications services by making good use of 5G technology, artificial intelligence, the internet of things, cloud computing, big data and edge computing.

China Telecom and China Mobile's designation as service providers to the games follows Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, which signed up as the official automobile services partner in April.
