A book series consisting of 11 volumes on Liangzhu civilization was launched at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou on July 7.

The Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City in Hangzhou, which date back 5,300 years, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list during the 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Compiled by 11 experienced editors from the Archaeological Research Institute of Zhejiang Province, the popular science collection focuses on the major archaeological discoveries and research of the ancient site over the past 80 years, including the city's ruins, surrounding water conservancy system, jade articles, cemeteries, and plant and animal discoveries.

Liangzhu's addition to the World Heritage List is a sign of Zhejiang's rising reputation in the international community, said Luo Weidong, vice president of Zhejiang University, adding that the university will step up cultural cooperation with other countries in order to increase awareness of Liangzhu civilization.

An exhibition entitled Liangzhu Civilization Towards the World was also launched on the same day.

Lu Dongming, president of Zhejiang University Press, said that the book series is the result of efforts from archaeologists over the past three decades and contains many pictures of the ruins as well as the valuable experiences of archaeologists.

"The book series and the exhibition will help people to better understand the ancient civilization and promote traditional Chinese culture," he said.
