Phoenix Mosque

ehangzhou.gov.cn| Updated: July 12, 2018 L M S

Located on Hangzhou’s Middle Zhongshan Road, the Phoenix Mosque is one of the four oldest Islamic mosques in China’s coastal areas. It is the center of Islamic worship in Hangzhou. Founded during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), the mosque was rebuilt in 1281 by Persian ‘Ala’ al-Din (?-1313), and then rebuilt again in mid-17th century. The name of the mosque is derived from its structure, which resembles a phoenix with wings spread across. The main hall was designed with touches of south- Yangtze style. The prayer hall dome was built during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and features a beamless design. ‘Ala’ al-Din’s tombstone is housed within the mosque.
